Born in Penang in 1932, Tan Chiang Kiong is presently the Art supervisor at Chung Ling (Private) High School, Penang. After finishing his studies at Teacher's Training College, Penang, he enrolled at the National Taiwan Normal University, Department of Fine Art for a B.A degree.

He is an outstanding painter who has successfully fused Chinese art and watercolour together to create a personal style. His works retain their Eastern spirit and yet incorporate certain departures from traditional techniques by throughtful composition and exploitation of colours. The strength of his paintings lie in the texture and inheret beauty of the medium of watercolour totally in a class of his own.

He took part in the Young Artists Art Exhibition, Taipei, Taiwan in 1960. After that he took part in exhibitions in Salon de Mei, Penang (1963), Ten Top Artists Invitational Exhibition, Penang (1975), Watercolour Invitational Exhibition, Penang (1984), International Teochew Artists Art Exhibition in Singapore and China (1987-89), Malaysian Biannual Exhibition of Watercolour Paintings, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore (1988-89), Asian Watercolour '88 Kuala Lumpur as well as the annual Penang Art Society exhibitions (1963 to 1988).

His paintings are collected by the Penang Museum and Art Gallery, ABN Bank, Penang, Bank Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, O.C.B.C. Bank, Singapore, Singapore Cable Car (Pte) Ltd, HIBEX Singapore Private Ltd and the Academy of Art., Shantou, China.

He is a committee member of Penang Art Society and Penang Watercolour Society. He is also a member of the Singapore Watercolour Society.
